When the inner self, soul or spirit of an individual has the power or ability to detach itself from the bondage of its physical body and project itself into higher ethereal astral planes, the phenomenon is known as projection of astral body.
There exists two separate schools of thought regarding projection of astral body as a phenomenon. These are the Mystical Model and the Phasing Model respectively which reflect two entirely distinct line of thoughts in an attempt to explain what this phenomenon is all about.
Projection of astral body as explained by the Mystical Model puts it across as a true out of body experience. Thus, this school of thought as defined by Robert Munroe believes in the existence of astral planes as higher levels or realms that exists externally to the physical universe. Hence the soul of a man separates from that of his physical body and travels outwards and upwards to it.
Projection of astral body according to this model starts with the creation of a subtle energy form within an individual after which this energy body is projected outside the physical body to higher realms of consciousness remaining connected to the latter with the help of a illuminated, silver energy umbilical cord.
Numerous books have been written on the basis of this Mystical Model of projection of astral body, and the immensely popular ones are those of ‘Out of Body Experiences’ by Robert Peterson , ‘Astral Dynamics’ by Robert Bruce and ‘Projection of Astral Body’ by Carrington and Muldoon all explaining the underlying concept thereof and practices and tips to successfully attaining it.
According to the Phasing Model, projection of astral body is not about projecting one’s inner self to an externally located astral plane as given by the Mystical Model. Rather, it talks about the physical existence and the astral body as the two extremes or two distinct phases on the same consciousness spectrum.
The Phasing Model as defined by Robert Munroe explains the projection of the astral body as something which does not occur outside one’s physical body. Therefore when a person projects himself, it is into another phase of consciousness instead of a place external to a person’s body. Thus, according to this model projection of the astral body is not an out of body experience in the real sense of the term, rather, it may be said to be in line with the philosophy stating external reality as an internally created state.
It must be noted that though both the above school of thoughts exists, with a fair amount of popularity and belief for both, it is not very clear as to which one actually holds good in case of projection of astral body. While on one hand it is unclear as to whether every physical object has a corresponding astral counterpart, it is also not known whether spirits reincarnate into physical bodies which makes astral projection feasible. For all one knows, the explanation to this phenomenon may be entirely something else.
It can be concluded that whatever may be the explanation that remains to be proven in time, projection of astral body is an experience of a lifetime which gives one a sense of an afterlife or what happens after death, changing and developing one’s outlook towards life, death and reality for ever.
