Reasons People Grieve

We grieve as instinctive reaction to loss. It is the anguish that you experience when someone who or something that is part of your life, someone or something you love, is no longer there.

Some examples of situations that are cause for sorrow are as follows:

- you have split up with someone – you were sacked from your employment – you lost that one chance to go after what you love doing the most – a member of the family tells you he or she has a deadly illness – the medical tests came in and you found out that you are suffering from a serious illness – you and your spouse are getting a divorce – you had a falling out with your best friend – your pet passed away – a person you love dies

These situations can all lead to an experience of grieving. Of all the examples cited above, we feel the most powerful anguish if a loved one – be this a son or daughter, a mother or father, or a spouse – dies. There is nothing that will be able to fill the void that suddenly opens up in our life when they die.

We may have shared a huge part of our existence with the people who have died. And life loses its former grandeur because of their demise. We feel the torment of having someone we cherish taken away from us. Yet, in our grief, we have the promise of being able to heal our pains and strengthen our lives to move onwards again.

There are no set instructions in grieving. Yet we must opt for healthy ways to channel the pail, which can foster the healing that we need after experiencing loss.

Grieving does not mean caterwauling or crying your heart out each time you remember what you have lost. Crying is not the only sign that we are mourning the death of a loved one. Someone may seem quiet, as if unfazed; yet deep within, they also feel the loss.

Also, in opposition to the myth, grieving does not only cover only one year. The span of the grieving process will be different for an person compared with another. If you are grieving, don\’t force yourself to instantly \”get over it.\” Time is a remarkable healer.
